You feel tired, your head has just started to pound and you’ve got a bad case of brain fog. What’s wrong? You might need to drink more water.

If you’re a guy, your body is made up of about 60% water. For women, that number is closer to 50%. The actual percentage of water depends on your body composition, your fitness, and your level of hydration.

How often do you feel thirsty? By the time you experience thirst, you have already lost 2-3% of your water. Around 1% dehydration, your mental performance and physical coordination start to suffer. That means before you even feel thirsty your body suffers negative effects from dehydration. To avoid this, you need to figure out how to keep yourself consistently hydrated.

If you start drinking water instead of soda pop or juice, you will cut calories out of your diet and that can help promote weight loss.

Toxins that stay in your body impact your energy levels and make you feel tired. Drink water to flush those toxins out of your system.

If you are dehydrated your muscles have a higher chance of cramping or becoming strained. Muscle cramps aren’t fun, so drink plenty of water.

How can you stay hydrated? Try drinking a big glass of water after you get out of bed in the morning and have a glass of water 30 minutes before you eat a meal. Keep a glass or bottle of water next to you and drink throughout the day as needed. If you don’t like water, try eating more fresh vegetables and fruits, or switch it up with milk or coconut water.

The easiest way to tell if you are hydrated is to take a look at the colour of your urine. It should be a pale yellow. If it seems to be a darker yellow you probably need to drink more water!
